The Linux Foundation announced the operational launch of the x402 Foundation on July 14, 2026, with Coinbase completing its contribution of the x402 protocol to open governance. The Foundation launched with 40 member organizations across Premier, General, and Associate tiers. Premier members include Adyen, AWS, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, MoonPay, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe, and Visa. The protocol embeds payment capabilities directly into HTTP web interactions, enabling AI agents and APIs to send and receive payments as seamlessly as they exchange data. It supports both traditional card payments and stablecoins and is designed to remain open, interoperable, and free from vendor lock-in.
Why it matters: x402 moving from a Coinbase-controlled protocol to a neutral, Linux Foundation-governed standard with all major card networks and cloud providers at the table is the moment the protocol became infrastructure rather than a product. x402 Protocol Records 1.4 Million Agentic Transactions on XRPL as Ripple Joins Linux Foundation Governance
The x402 protocol recorded 1.43 million agentic transactions and 4,463 XRP in merchant settlements on the XRP Ledger, the first published volume data for x402 adoption on a non-EVM chain. Ripple joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member alongside the other 16 organizations at that tier.
