Coinbase Opens x402 Business Payments: Corporate Customers Can Now Accept Agent-Initiated USDC

Coinbase announced on July 23, 2026 that Coinbase Business customers can now accept payments directly from AI agents through x402, the open internet payment standard originally incubated by Coinbase and Cloudflare before its transfer to the Linux Foundation on July 14. A business can now authorize an AI agent to pay in USDC with no additional setup, powered by Coinbase Payments. The announcement closes what Coinbase described as the last gap in the AI agent economy: businesses lacked a native way to receive agent-initiated payments without custom integration work. With the Linux Foundation transfer earlier in the month, x402 governance is now formally open, and Coinbase's July 23 product move is the first major commercial activation built directly on the post-transfer protocol. The premier membership list includes AWS, Stripe, Circle, Cloudflare, Ripple, Shopify, American Express, Adyen, Fiserv, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, and Monad Foundation.
Why it matters: This is the first time a major exchange has shipped a production payment path where a business opts in to receiving money from an AI agent with zero custom plumbing. The x402 Foundation transfer on July 14 established open governance; this July 23 announcement is the first commercial product built on that foundation. For agentic commerce builders, it means any Coinbase Business merchant is now a reachable x402 endpoint. The Linux Foundation membership list doubles as a signal of who is building on the protocol stack: AWS, Stripe, Shopify, and American Express all present.

Thredd Joins Visa Agentic Ready Programme, Extending Agent Payment Rails to European Card Issuers
Thredd, the AI-first card payment processing platform, announced on July 22 that it has joined the Visa Agentic Ready Programme. The move allows card issuers across Europe to participate in agent-initiated payments without rebuilding their payment infrastructure. Zilch is the first issuer going live under the Thredd-Visa partnership.
