Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services integrate the x402 payment protocol into edge computing infrastructure
2026-07-06 · Source
Cloudflare has opened a waitlist for its Monetization Gateway, which implements the x402 open protocol for stablecoin-based payments. This service allows customers to charge for web pages, datasets, and Model Context Protocol tools without requiring traditional API keys. The announcement follows the recent release of similar x402 capabilities within AWS CloudFront and AWS WAF. By utilizing the long-reserved HTTP 402 status code, these hyperscalers are creating a standardized way for agents to handle micropayments at the edge. This integration facilitates frictionless machine-to-machine commerce by moving payment logic from the application layer to the network layer.
Why it matters: This development enables developers to build self-monetizing AI agents that can pay for resources and services across major cloud providers using a standardized machine-readable protocol.
